"An invalid XML character (0x1a) was found in the value of attribute 'n'" error occurs when a user re-executes a saved report from the user's My Reports folder in MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1 and above.

SYMPTOM:
"An invalid XML character (0x1a) was found in the value of attribute 'n'" error occurs when a user re-executes a saved report from the user's My Reports folder in Strategy Web 9.4.1. When executing the report for the first time, the error does not occur.
The error only occurs for users who have named the report object with non-English alphanumeric characters.

CAUSE:
The metadata database is not set to use UTF-8 or UNICODE as the character set. When a report is saved with a non-English character set, the database cannot write or store the correct value in the non-English character.

ACTION:
The user can resolve this issue in one of the following two ways:

  1. The user should rename all reports residing in the My Reports folder to have only English characters or any characters that the database character set setting can accept using Strategy Developer.
  2. The user can choose to migrate to a Unicode database. A new metadata shell can be created using the Configuration Wizard on the Unicode database. After ensuring that all existing objects have acceptable character sets in the current metadata database, projects can then be duplicated using the Project Duplication Wizard.
