MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.x-10.x contains a rich environment which allows for customized formatting of reports. A key to making the most of the formatting options involves understanding the formatting hierarchy.

Strategy Developer 9.4.x-10.x contains a rich environment which allows for customized formatting of reports. A key to making the most of the formatting options involves understanding the formatting hierarchy.
Formatting is applied at many different levels. For example, formatting may be applied directly to a metric. A particular report can have its own color scheme and font. Each of these levels is part of a hierarchy which determines what formatting level overrides another.
When formatting is applied, it starts at the lowest level and each subsequent "layer" of formatting is added. Formatting that is added in an earlier level will be overridden by formatting that is added later.
Formats are added in the following order, from first to last:

metric
axis
grid unit
all metrics
report metric
banding
column subtotals
row subtotals
report border
threshold

Since metric formatting is added first, it will be overridden by any formatting added to a particular report that also designated formatting of metric values.

To help illustrate this information, a sample formatting scenario follows:
A user edits the Profit metric to have a yellow background using the metric editor with the intention of using this metric in several reports, as shown below:

When the metric is put onto a grid report and executed, the results do not show the specified formatting for the metric, as shown below:

The reason why the formatting does not appear is because the metric formatting was overridden with formatting from a higher level.
The possible levels that could be overriding the formatting in this case are:

grid unit
all metric
report metric
banding
threshold

Check the grid level metric by right-clicking on the metric and selecting Formatting, then selecting the name of the metric, as shown below:

This reveals that formatting is set to default and thus, is not overriding the formatting set at the metric level, as shown below:

Checking the all metrics formatting by clicking Format -> All Metrics -> data reveals that the default formatting is not used. Therefore, the formatting designated at this level is overriding the desired metric formatting, as shown below:

Check the Use defaults option, as shown below:

Executing the report again displays the desired metric formatting now that the higher-level formatting has been cleared, as shown below:

Note that Autostyles do contain the following formatting:

font
alignment
border
pattern

These apply as report level formatting. Absent from this list is number formatting, as it is common to apply number formatting (such as currency) at the metric level.
