KB12586: “MDUpdate does not support updating this version of MicroStrategy Metadata” message appears when running MDUpdateUtil.exe in MicroStrategy

SYMPTOM:
When attempting to update a project via the MDUpdateUtil tool, the following message appears:
 

 
MDUpdate does not support updating this version of Strategy Metadata. Either it has a newer version or its version cannot be determined.
When looking at the MD7UPD.log file the following error is found:
 
ERROR: Version '' of project or configuration cannot be updated.
This release of Metadata Update only supports the following versions...
NOTE: above is replaced with the version of the metadata configuration object.
 
CAUSE:
The above message indicates that the selected project cannot be updated because of one of the following reasons:
 

• The version of Strategy software on the machine running the MDUpdateUtil is older than the version of the metadata's configuration object, as shown below:
  

•  
  The MDUpdateUtil tool can only be used successfully from a machine whose most recent metadata system object version is greater than or equal to the metadata's configuration object version. This is the most likely cause for the error.
   
  NOTE: The metadata system object version is taken from the Strategy Common Files version of the machine running MDUpdateUtil.
   
  
• The metadata version cannot be determined.

ACTION:
Run the MDUpdateUtil tool from a machine that has a version of Strategy greater than or equal to the configuration object of the metadata that is to be upgraded.
