KB12638: How to determine which port is used to connect to a metadata or data warehouse database.

When Strategy Intelligence Server connects to the metadata or data warehouse, it triggers a process called Mjmulprc_32.exe or mjmulprc_64.exe that performs all of the database connection operations (handshake, connections, etc.) During this process, authentication credentials, including login/password and port number, are sent to the database. The same procedure also occurs in a 2-tier connection. If a firewall is used between Strategy Intelligence Server and either the metadata or data warehouse database, the port used to connect must be open in order for Strategy to function properly. The port used by the ODBC can be determined and set within the DSN.

To determine which port is used to connect to a database used by Strategy, follow the steps below:

  • Select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC).
  • Select the System DSN tab and select the DSN to the database, as shown below:

  • Select Configure, as shown below:

  • The port will be listed on one of the screens of the DSN editor depending on the type of database being used.

The following is a small sampling of different database DSNs and where the port information is set:

    SQL Server:

The port can be found by clicking on Client Configuration, as shown below:

    Oracle:

The port will be listed under the General tab as follows:
