KB12957: What is the optimum maximum file size value for the DSSErrors.log?

KB describes how to manage your DSSErrors logging

The default value for the Maximum File Size for the DSSErrors.log is set as 2000 KB. This might be inadequate, particularly for high-usage environments, when trying to detect infrequent events. It is not possible for Strategy to suggest an optimum value for all usage conditions due to the variations in hardware specifications and machine resource availability. There is a tradeoff between the maximum file size and overall performance; when the log size increases, performance decreases. Performance depends on machine resources available during logging and the specified amount of logging.

A workaround to enable capturing more information is to send additional logging to new files instead of using the DSSErrors.log itself. The DSSErrors.log.bak file, which automatically stores the data overflow from the DSSErrors.log file, captures the same amount of data as the DSSErrors.log file. Hence an increase of 1000 KB in the maximum file size value increases the total data collected, between the two files, by 2000 KB.

Clearing out unnecessary informational messages enables more efficient use of the file space. Refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base document for more information on how to eliminate ODBC informational messages:

KB5300-752-0555 - DSSErrors.log is filled with ODBC informational messages in Strategy Intelligence Server versions 8.0.0 and 8.0.1.
