This TN outlines How to register MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal 9.x and later as a service.

To register Strategy Intelligence Server as a service in UNIX or Linux, the user should be logged in as the ROOT user (or should be part of the systems group). Once the user is logged on as the ROOT user, Strategy Intelligence Server can be registered as a service using the following two options:

  1. Strategy Configuration Wizard
  2. Using MSTRCTL utility (~/MicroStrategy/bin directory)

A. To register Strategy Intelligence Server using Strategy Configuration Wizard, follow the steps below:

  • Open Strategy Configuration Wizard.
  • Select the option for 'Set up Strategy Intelligence Server' and click Next.
  • Select the ODBC Data Source Name to connect to the metadata repository and provide the necessary user name and password. Click Next.
  • Enter the Strategy user name and password used to connect to the metadata repository. Click Next.
  • Select the operation to be performed with the server definitions. There are options to create a new definition, use an existing definition, or delete a current definition. Click Next.
  • Provide the port number for Strategy Intelligence Server to use. Check the 'Register Intelligence Server as a Service' box and click Next as shown below:

B. To register Strategy Intelligence Server using mstrctl from the ~/MicroStrategy/bin directory , follow the steps below:

  1. In the Terminal Screen Window, browse to ~/MicroStrategy/bin/ directory
  2. Type the following command to register Strategy Intelligence Server as service:
    mstrctl -s IntelligenceServer rs

Note: To un-register Strategy Intelligence Server as a service, use the following command:

mstrctl -s IntelligenceServer us
