KB13025: How to search on a phrase instead of keywords when using the element browser search in MicroStrategy Developer and Web 9.4.1 and 10.x.

How to search on a phrase instead of keywords when using the element browser search in MicroStrategy Developer and Web 9.4.1 and 10.x.

SYMPTOM
When searching for an element in the Object Browser or an Element List in Strategy Developer and Web 9.4.1 and 10.x, the user only wants an element returned if it contains the exact phrase being searched. Instead, the search returns all elements that contain one or all of the search words.

CAUSE
The element browser assumes an OR operator between all words in a search phrase. As an example, a user wants to find The Old Man and the Sea under the Items attribute in the Strategy Tutorial project. The user searches on the phrase AND THE SEA. This returns all elements containing one or all of the words AND, THE, and SEA. It will also return elements that have words that contain these words, such as handbook, as shown below:

If the search phrase is only a substring of the element, such is the case with the above example, surrounding the search phrase with double quotes will not return the expected element. The double quotes can only be applied when attempting to search on the entire element (i.e. "The Old Man and the Sea").

ACTION
The user should use an underscore (_) instead of a space ( ) between words in the search phrase. In this example, the user should search on the following: AND_THE_SEA. Doing so will return only elements that contain the exact phrase 'and the sea', as shown below:
