KB13029: The ‘Values on Slices’ graph option does not work on pie charts in MicroStrategy Desktop 8.x

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

Data label values on a pie chart do not display on the slices of the chart in MicroStrategy Developer. In Manual Layout Mode, the user should select the 'Values on Slices radio button under the 'Data Labels' graph option and click 'Apply' to move the data label values onto the slices.

SYMPTOM:
Data label values on a pie chart do not display on the slices of the chart in Strategy Developer. The user selects the 'Values on Slices radio button under the 'Data Labels' graph options. When the user clicks 'Apply', the data label values move onto the slices, as shown below:

However, when the user clicks OK, the data label values shift back to 'Values outside Slices' mode, as shown below:

CAUSE:
The graph is set by default to Automatic Layout. Changes made to the graph do not hold unless the graph is in Manual Layout mode.

ACTION:
To change the graph to Manual Layout mode:

  • Navigate to the Graph menu -> Preferences.
  • In the Preferences editor, click the Layout tab.
  • Check the 'Manual layout' checkbox, as shown below:

  • Click OK.

To place the data values on the slices:

  1. Right-click the graph and select 'Graph Options'
  2. Click the Data Labels tab.
  3. Check the Show Values checkbox.
  4. Select the 'Values on Slices' option.
  5. Click OK.

The values now appear on the slices, as shown below:
