KB13112: The freeform SQL editor will not allow users to change the definition of the objects saved with a report in MicroStrategy Developer 9.x and 10.x

KB13112: The freeform SQL editor will not allow users to change the definition of the objects saved with a report in MicroStrategy Developer 9.x and 10.x

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Developer 9.x and 10.x, the Freeform SQL report editor will not allow a user to change the definition (e.g. name and data types) of the objects saved with the report.

CAUSE:
This occurs because once the objects are saved, the freeform SQL editor will not allow the user to change the fundamental definition of these objects including the name and data types.

The rename performed inside the report editor only creates an alias of the object for this specific report, as shown below:

ACTION:
The user can change the name of the attribute or metric by launching a search for these objects and renaming or editing these objects. This behavior is similar to attributes and metrics in regular reports. Once they are created, the user cannot rename/edit them from the report editor. The user must go to the attribute or metric editor.

To rename these objects, follow the steps below:

  1. Launch the search editor from Tools -> Search for objects.
  2. In the search dialog box, go to the Tools menu and select Options.
  3. In the options dialog box, select the option ‘Display Managed Objects’.
  4. Click OK and return to the search interface. Type in the name of the object and run a search.
  5. The Freeform SQL object will appear in the search results with the location.
  6. Right-click on the object and select Rename to be able to rename it.
