KB13421: How to manually generate the Activation XML file in the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.x - 10.x

Community Admin

• Strategy

In some situations, the Activate.xml may need to be generated manually (essentially re-generated) because of hardware changes on the machine or because the current version of the file is corrupted. The following knowledge base article outlines the process to do so in MicroStrategy 9.x - 10.x

Installing, modifying, or upgrading Strategy Intelligence Server installations will automatically generate an Activation XML file that contains information about the installation. This file called Activate.xml is located in the \Program Files\Common Files\Strategy folder. During server activation, this XML file, also called the 'Activation File is uploaded to Strategy either automatically by the installation routine or through Strategy License Manager; or by manually uploading the Activation File through a web browser via a secure web site, https://licensing.Strategy.com. The server activation process may be completed in one of the following ways:

  • Receiving the Activation Code by email from the licensing web site (after providing requested information about the installation, at installation time or through Strategy License Manager) and applying this code through Strategy License Manager.
  • Receiving the Activation Code from the licensing web site after manually uploading the Activation File and applying this code through Strategy License Manager. The Activation File is generated at installation time or through Strategy License Manager only after requested information about installation is provided.

In some situations, the Activate.xml may need to be generated manually (essentially re-generated) because of hardware changes on the machine or because the current version of the file is corrupted. The following sections outline the process to do so in Strategy 9.x.

In Strategy 9.x - 10.x, the Activation file is automatically re-generated anytime user goes through the process of requesting an Activation Code through Strategy License Manager, as shown below:

Users may need to go through the process of manual activation because the machine does not have internet access. For this situation in the Strategy Intelligence Server 9.x -10.x,  users should follow the steps below to regenerate the Activation file:

  • Users must launch Strategy License Manager
  • The user should then go to License Administration -> Activate Server Installation, and Click Next.
  • The user should now pick the option 'Generate Activation File and Request Activation Code'. In the next 2-3 dialog windows, the user must fill in all the requested information about Installation and Installer.
  • On the last dialog box, users should pick the option, 'No I will request the Activation Code at a later time' rather than 'Yes I want to request an Activation code now', as shown below:

  •
Users should pick the second option ('No I will request the Activation Code at a later time') because they do not have internet access on this machine and all they want to do is to regenerate the Activation file. This action will regenerate this XML file. Thereafter, users can verify the timestamp of the Activate.xml file and confirm that it is has been re-generated.

  • Thereafter, users can continue with the process of manual activation by uploading this newly generated Activation file to the licensing site and requesting an Activation code.
