KB13423: MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.x-10.x is unable to connect to the XMLA provider even when the machine hosting the service can be accessed using the machine name

Community Admin

• Strategy

SYMPTOM:
When trying to create a database connection to an XMLA provider, a user specifies only the machine name in the URL. The user can "ping" the machine hosting the XMLA provider and also view this machine using a browser by only specifying the machine name. Even with this, the user may still not be able to connect to the XMLA provider using Strategy Intelligence Server

The user will see an error similar to the one shown below:

ka04W000000ObijQAC_0EM440000002FYx.jpeg

Database error <>:XMLA Discover failed. Soap Error. Error type: XMLA error. XMLA Exception: SAX Parser Fatal Error. The result set may contain the character '&' or '<'. Not all OLAP Cube providers handle these characters properly and that may be causing this report to fail. Invalid document structure
HTTP Communication error reported by libcurl: Could not resolve host: <host name> (Domain name not found). The ebbedded SOAP error is:.Connection String:<connection information provided>;.
CAUSE:
The Strategy Intelligence Servers need to be able to resolve the host name of the XMLA provider machine to an IP address in order to connect to the data source.

ACTION:
In order to access the machine hosting XMLA provider, users must provide the fully qualified URL or the IP address. The correct configuration is shown below:
