KB13433: How to re-use a managed object in a Freeform SQL report in MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.x-10.x

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

If a virtual attribute A is defined based on column A1 from Table 1 for a Freeform SQL report, the same virtual attribute A can be used in another Freeform SQL report even though the attribute in the second report is based on another column, Column A2 from table 2 in MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.x-10.x

If a virtual attribute A is defined based on column A1 from Table 1 for a Freeform SQL report, the same virtual attribute A can be used in another Freeform SQL report even though the attribute in the second report is based on another column, Column A2 from table 2 in Strategy Developer 9.4.x-10.x.

To re-use managed objects in a freeform SQL report, follow the steps below:

  • Create a Date - Test virtual attribute from the Day_Date column in the LU_Day table from the Strategy Tutorial warehouse and use it in a Freeform SQL report 1 (Attribute A in the example).
    Report 1 Freeform SQL Definition:

  • Create a second Freeform SQL Report based on the ORDER_Date column from the Order_Detail table (column A2 from table 2 in the example) and the Quantity metric. Notice that the same virtual attribute Date -Test is being used by dragging it from the object browser onto the report definition to map to the ORDER_Date column.
    Report 2 Freeform SQL Definition:

  • To confirm that these two columns do map to each other even though the same managed object is being used in the reports, create a document with the Date -Test attributes and the metrics from the two reports, Count of Month and Quantity. Notice that the document returns data where Day_Date column from LU_DAY is the same as Order_Date column from the Order_Detail table. This explains that managed objects can be re-used in different Freeform SQL reports even though the attributes are defined by two different columns. These objects can be used across reports even if the reports are based out of two different database instances.
