KB13461: When a user sets Character Set Encoding to UTF-8 for Oracle/Access data warehouse, Japanese characters will not display correctly in report in MicroStrategy Developer 9.x - 10.x

When a user sets Character Set Encoding to UTF-8 for Oracle/Access data warehouse, Japanese characters will not display correctly in report in MicroStrategy Developer 9.x - 10.x

SYMPTOM:

When a user sets Character Set Encoding to UTF-8 under the Database Instance advanced ODBC settings for an Oracle/Access data warehouse, Japanese characters will not display correctly in report in Strategy Developer 9.x - 10.x.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

Follow the steps below to reproduce this issue:

  • Change the default regional setting of the operating System to Japanese.
  • Create a report with an attribute pointing to a Data Warehouse (UTF-8 enabled) column with Japanese characters.
  • In the Database Instance editor, when modifying ’Database Connections’ under the Advanced tab, choose UTF-8 for the Character Set Encoding, as shown below:

  • Execute the report and the data will not display correctly in report grid, as shown below:

CAUSE:

The UTF-8 setting is available to allow users to configure the database instance to enable support for a Teradata Unicode UTF8 character set in the warehouse. For all other databases (e.g. Oracle and Access), this setting should be configured to ‘Multibyte.’

Change the Character Set Encoding back to ‘Multibyte’ and the data will display correctly in report grid, as shown below:
