KB14275: ‘ActiveX component can't create object’ error occurs in MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server 9.x when trying to edit an information object using an ODBC ISM

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x, the following error occurs when trying to edit an information object using an ODBC ISM, as shown below:

This issue occurs specifically due to the following reasons:

  • Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x has been reinstalled.
  • Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x has been upgraded to a newer version.

CAUSE:
The Database (ODBC) ISM is provided to customers as a sample code and is not an out-of-the-box Information Source Module. Hence, any upgrades or re-installations won't assume the Database (ODBC) ISM is installed. Thus, any previous configurations are cleared.

ACTION:
Re-register the Database (ODBC) ISM by following the steps below:

  1. Open Windows Explorer and browse to C:\Program Files\MicroStrategy\Narrowcast Server\Delivery Engine\SampleCode\ISMSamples\DatabaseISM\CompiledFiles.
  2. Double-click on the RegisterISM.bat file.
  3. Run Regedit (in the Start Menu under Run, type Regedit).
  4. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicroStrategy\Strategy Broadcast. Server\7.0\Modules\ISM.
  5. Create a new String Value and name it 'OdbcISMAdmin.cOdbcISMAdmin'. Leave the value empty.
  6. Close and re-open the Strategy Narrowcast Server Administrator.

Strategy Narrowcast Server 8.x will then recognize the Database (ODBC) ISM again and the information object can be edited again.

NOTE: The Database (ODBC) ISM sample code is strictly to be used as an example and not intended for use in production quality environments. This sample code is meant to be used for testing, demonstration, illustration, educational, and proof-of-concept purposes only. This sample code is provided "as-is" and Strategy accepts no warranty of any kind.
