KB14307: How to ensure that the derived metric calculates the correct ‘Count’ in MicroStrategy Developer

How to ensure that the derived metric calculates the correct ‘Count’ in MicroStrategy Developer.

SYMPTOM:
Consider a report containing the metrics 'Unit Cost' and 'Revenue' in Strategy Developer. A derived metric is created based on these two metrics and is defined as 'Derived metric = Unit Cost * Revenue', as shown below:

On displaying the 'Count', the derived metric displays Count. This gives an incorrect value, as shown below:

CAUSE:
This occurs when the Evaluation Order is not set to calculate the derived metric first and then the count. In this case, 'Show consolidations only (6.x evaluation order)' is checked for Evaluation Order, as shown below:

ACTION:
Follow the steps below to resolve this issue:

  • Create a report with attribute 'Year' and the metrics 'Unit Cost' and 'Revenue'.
  • Create a derived metric based on the definition 'Derived metric = Unit Cost * Revenue' as shown above.
  • On the toolbar, go to Data -> Report Data Options -> Evaluation Order and uncheck 'Show consolidations only (6.x evaluation order)'.
  • Under 'View evaluation order', set the following evaluation orders:

    • Derived metric: 1
    • Count: 2

Setting this evaluation order will ensure that the derived metric is calculated first and then the count is calculated on that. The report will then display the correct count, as shown below:
