KB14409: Threshold cannot be applied to the cells where null values are returned with MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.x - 10.x

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

This technical note explain why thresholds cannot be applied to the cells where null values are returned with MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.x - 10.x

SYMPTOM:
Thresholds applied to cells where null values are returned cannot be applied in Strategy Developer.
Consider the following threshold defined to the metric value with the condition 'Prodt (attribute) Where ID exactly Altprod (attribute) ID'. Notice that the threshold is not applied in the report, as shown below:

CAUSE:
The product is working as designed. No metric value is actually returned by this report. The empty cells in this report are a result of cross tab null.
To verify if a cross tab null instead of a database null, place all of the attributes in the row. Confirm if there is any row with null value returned then, as shown below:

ACTION:
Create a database null instead of cross-tab null by adding an outer join to the lookup table by following the steps below:

  • Check the attribute definition and make sure a proper lookup table is specified as a lookup, as shown below:

  • Make sure 'Preserve all lookup table elements joined to final pass result table based on template attributes with filter' is selected as the Join option in the VLDB Property of the report, as shown below:

  • Execute the report and confirm that the database null is generated where the defined threshold is applied properly, as shown below:
