KB14566: Architecture to deploy MicroStrategy clients using Citrix Presentation Server

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

This article explains the architecture to deploy MicroStrategy clients using Citrix Presentation Server.

Strategy clients can be deployed to multiple users using 3rd party software like Citrix Presentation Server. The purpose of this document is to explain the architecture of each component and how to expand the power of Strategy users using Citrix technology.
Citrix Presentation Server is a solution for providing any user with secure access to client/server applications from anywhere using any device or connection. This technology enables the use of remote sessions to any particular application like Strategy Desktop and Strategy Web to any Citrix Presentation Server supported Operating System device such as Windows, UNIX, Linux, MS/DOS, etc.

Architecture

This architecture must be divided into three different layers:

  1. In the first layer is the Strategy Intelligence Server, which will act as the main engine of this architecture. The Strategy Intelligence Server is responsible for getting the data from the metadata and warehouse using the ODBC protocol and sending it to the application server.

  2. The application server must be placed in the second layer. This server must contain the Citrix Presentation Server, Strategy Developer and/or the web browser that will connect to Strategy Web. This server will provide the application to be deployed and must meet all Strategy and Citrix Requirements. The protocol used to communicate Strategy Developer with Strategy Intelligence Server is TCP/IP. The protocol used in this layer to communicate the web browser with Strategy Web is HTTP.

Refer to the Readme for more information about Strategy product requirements.

For more information about Citrix Presentation Server Requirements, please contact Citrix.

The protocol used to communicate the clients with the Application Server is Citrix ICA

Note: Refer to Citrix Presentation Server Help or the Citrix Knowledge Base for further discussions on support, installation, and configuration of this product.

  3. The third layer is where the clients are located. This could be inside or outside the corporate network. The remote session is launched from the application server and the traffic consists of images, mouse clicks, and keystrokes. The data from the warehouse never cross the line between layers two and three.
