How to enable the Drill menu in a Freeform SQL report in MicroStrategy Developer 9.x

SYMPTOM:
When using Freeform SQL and trying to drill an attribute, the drill option is not enabled in Strategy Developer 9.x.

CAUSE:
To enable drilling using Freeform SQL, it is necessary to create the Freeform SQL report and add all the existing attributes involved in the drilling. Two possible scenarios can exist here:

  1. When using existing attributes, verify that the drill map exists and add all the attributes involved in the drilling into the report.
  2. When creating new attributes, a new drill map must be created. Then add all the attributes involved in the drilling into the report.

For more information about how to create a drill map, refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base technical note:

ACTION:
Follow the steps below to resolve this issue:

  • The user must first map the attributes. It is necessary to locate them in the Object Browser and drag and drop them to the right window. The SQL must correspond to these attributes. Click OK, as shown below:

  •
NOTE: All the attributes involved must be mapped, including the main attribute and the drill destination attribute. A drill map with this relation must exist in a standard report.

  • Next, edit the report and move the drill destination attribute to the Report objects window (OLAP services must be enabled). Execute the report, as shown below:

  • Right-click on the attribute and execute the drill, as shown below:
