KB14608: History List Messages Appear to Have Been Deleted When Users Logout of MicroStrategy Web 9.X or When Using a Custom External Security Module for User Logon

Community Admin

• Strategy

The History List message list is empty after a user logs in through MicroStrategy Web 9.x then logs out and logs back in again. This may also happen when the Web Server is configured to use a custom security module for user log on.

SYMPTOM:

The History List message list is empty after a user logs in through Strategy Web 9.x then logs out and logs back in again. This may also happen when the Web Server is configured to use a custom security module for user log on.

Users using a custom external security module may can follow the steps below to reproduce this issue in the Strategy Tutorial project:

  • Check that the Logout setting 'Remove the finished jobs from the History List' in the Security section of the Web Preferences is set to 'No', as shown below:

  • Login and execute a report and send it to the History List. Check the status of the message in the History List, as shown below:

  • Logout and log back in. Check the History List again. Notice that the message saved in the last login was deleted, as shown below:

CAUSE:

When a user session is created with the Strategy Intelligence Server, one of the possible session flags is whether the users history list messages must be deleted on logout of the user session. The session can also be set to only delete history list messages that have been read at logout, or no deletion at all. This behaviour is controlled by the preferences in Strategy Web (as shown above), and users can change their preferences to control the action they would like to take.
When a custom external security module is used for user log on, every time the user session is created explicitly, specific user and project level preferences have to be set directly on the new session object as session flags or through public methods. These preferences will not be read from User or Project level preferences as shown above.

ACTION:

To set the 'Remove the finished job from the History List' to 'No', the session flags on WebIServerSession object could be set with the appropriate flags prior to creating a new session in the following manner:

setSessionFlags(getSessionFlags() & ~EnumDSSXMLSessionFlags.DssXmlSessionDeleteReadMsgsOnClose);
