KB14661: How to obtain the description of the various system error numbers logged by MicroStrategy Intelligence Server on Linux

The following knowledge base article discusses how to get the description of various system errors logged by the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server running on Linux.

Strategy Intelligence Server Universal runs on a number of platforms such as AIX, Solaris, Linux and HP-UX. For each of these platforms, the system error codes may vary, and even between versions of the same operating system, the same error codes may indicate differing problems. This is why the descriptions of all system errors are not written to the error logs.
Users may periodically see error messages in the DSSErrors or other logs such as the one below, and may be interested in obtaining the description for the error number written in the logs:


MSINetStream::net_read(), socket recv() error, error code = 104

In such cases, follow the steps below to obtain the description:

  1. Look into the header file <errno.h> file that is installed with the operating system.
  2. Typically the location for the files is as follows:
    • AIX - /usr/include/errno.h
    • HP-UX - /usr/include/sys/errno.h
    • Linux - /usr/include/asm-x86_64/errno.h, /usr/include/asm-i386/errno.h
    • Solaris - /usr/include/sys/errno.h
  3. In case this file cannot be found, contact the System Administrator to determine if an alternative location has been used.
  4. Upon opening the file in a text viewer, users will see text similar to the following:

  5. Each line with the #define statement defines an error message and the numeric error code. This number is typically followed with a description of the error within the /* */ delimiters.

For the example shown above, when looking into the errno.h header file on the machine where this error was seen, the error number 104 translates to:

This error is a network error indicating that the connection was reset.
