KB14855: Just after installing MicroStrategy Web, the post-installation process for activation shows up even though MicroStrategy Intelligence Server was installed on separate hardware that has already been activated

Article outlines why MicroStrategy Web must be activated separately.

SYMPTOM:
It is very common to install Strategy Intelligence Server and Strategy Web on different machines in order to balance the work load. Just after the installation of Strategy Intelligence Server finishes, the post-installation process to activate the server begins. The same post-installation process begins after installing Strategy Web, and if this process is not completed, the user receives a message that some products should be activated and these products will became unavailable once the period for activation is over, as shown below:

CAUSE:
This is a normal behavior since the Strategy Activation process should be taken per installation. Each installation should be activated and it does not matter which products were installed, such as only Strategy Web products as shown below:

ACTION:
Go to through the installation wizard and complete the activation process in order to activate the new installation.

  8. Click Done.
  9. Go to https://licensing.Strategy.com.
  10. Click on link 'Activate a Server Installation'.
  11. In the XML file path, click on browser and point to C:\Program Files\Common Files\MicroStrategy\Activate.xml (this is the default path but choose a different one in case it has been changed).
  12. Click on Submit.
  13. An email with the activation code will be sent to the email account mentioned in https://licensing.Strategy.com.
  14. Open the email and make a copy of activation code.
