KB15040: How to configure MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal 9.x and 10.x if the MicroStrategy Configuration Wizard encounters errors or if no graphic user interface is available

In cases where the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal 8.x Configuration Wizard is not functioning correctly in UNIX environments, MicroStrategy Intelligence Server may still be configured for a normal startup using the MicroStrategy Configuration Wizard in Microsoft Windows and the MicroStrategy commandline server configuration utility.

In cases where the Strategy Intelligence Server Universal 8.x Configuration Wizard is not functioning correctly in UNIX environments, Strategy Intelligence Server may still be configured for a normal startup using the Strategy Configuration Wizard in Microsoft Windows and the Strategy commandline server configuration utility.

NOTE: If the UNIX environment has no graphical user interface (GUI) installed, the steps described in this technical note may be used to complete the configuration.

To configure Strategy Intelligence Server in this way, perform the following steps:

  1. If a Data Source Name (DSN) to the metadata does not already exist on a Microsoft Windows machine where the Configuration Wizard is installed, create a metadata DSN on that machine.
  2. Launch the Configuration Wizard on that Microsoft Windows machine.
  3. If the metadata repository has not been created, use the Windows Configuration Wizard to create the new metadata shell.
  4. In the Windows Configuration Wizard, use the 'Set up Strategy Intelligence Server' option to create a new server definition if needed. If the metadata shell already contains the desired server definition, the Configuration Wizard may be used to choose the projects to load at startup in that server definition.

NOTE: If the server definition exists and does not need any changes, then there is no need to use the Configuration Wizard in Microsoft Windows.

  5. On the UNIX Strategy Intelligence Server machine, navigate to the Strategy bin directory shown below:
    cd /bin
  6. Use the mstr-configure utility to select the metadata repository, server definition, and port to be used at Strategy Intelligence Server startup. An example transcript follows. User input is in red.
    --------:--------/mstr802/bin> mstrsvr-configure
    Configuring default I-Server instance 'CastorServer'...
Which port do you want to use for I-Server?(decimal)
    34952
Which DSN to use for I-Server?(DSN Name)
    MD801
What is the login for this DSN?
    sa
What is the password for this DSN?

Which ServerDef do you want to use?

    Updating configuration...
    Done.

The mstr-configure utility writes the desired values into the Strategy Intelligence Server registry (MSIReg.reg). It does not use the DUMMYMDT server instance to validate the selection of server definition.

IMPORTANT: The server definition name must be typed exactly as it appears in the metadata. Any misspelling could cause Strategy Intelligence Server to fail to start.

After completing these steps, Strategy Intelligence Server should be able to start normally.
