KB15194: Which of the two Automatic Mapping Settings take precedence in MicroStrategy Developer 9.x when adding a new table to a project?

In Strategy Developer 9.x, there are two options that govern how Automatic Mapping works.

The first option can be found by editing the Warehouse Catalog and going to Options > Schema > Automatic Mapping, as shown below:

The second option can be found by editing the Attribute Form's Expression definition seen below:

The Automatic Mapping option selected in the Warehouse Catalog works in conjunction with the Mapping method enabled at the attribute level. To understand how Automatic Mapping works, consider the following scenarios:

  1. The Automatic Mapping option in the Warehouse Catalog is set to "Map schema objects to the new tables automatically".
    • If Mapping method for the Attribute Form Expression is set to "Automatic": Any newly added table will be automatically checked as a source table for the attribute form, if they contain the columns used to define the expression. This mapping method saves users from manually mapping objects to these new tables.
    • If Mapping method for the Attribute Form Expression is set to "Manual". Any newly added table will NOT be automatically checked as a source table for the attribute. The attribute form will still show the newly added table as an 'available' source table, but it will not be checked automatically.
  2. The Automatic Mapping option in the Warehouse Catalog is set to "Do not map schema objects to the new tables". In this case, any newly added table will NOT be automatically checked as a source table for an attribute even if the Mapping method at the attribute level is set to "Automatic" .
