KB15248: What is the impact of changing the Administrator’s password in the MicroStrategy environment?

Administrators may want to know what impact changing the password for the Administrator user has. In general, impact on Strategy GUI (Graphical User Interface) should not be an issue because users should be prompted to enter new password at run time.

However, non-GUI operations (command line), pre-stored text, and batch files would be impacted if the Administrator password changed. Below is the list of possible operations:

  1. Command Manager: cmdmgr -n Project_Source_Name -u Username -f Inputfile

    • For more information, type in cmdmgr -help.
    • Refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base technical note:

    • KB6392 (KB6600-7X0-0013) - How to execute a command manager script through a command line interface with Strategy Administrator - Command Manager 9.x

NOTE: Strategy Intelligence Server Administration, such as 'mstrctl -m ls' (list all services on the Strategy Intelligence Server) will not be impacted. Those rely on machine or network passwords.

  • Project duplication: Projectduplicate.exe -f <path and name of XML file> -sp <password> -dp <password>

    • -f is the path and name of the XML file
    • -sp is the password for the Administrator's login to the source project
    • -dp is the password for the Administrator's login to the destination project
    • Refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base technical note:

    • KB30159 - How to run a Project Duplication through the command line in Strategy 8.1.x to 9.x

  • Open Desktop command: MSTRDESK /open Project_Source_Name\\UID\PWD

    • Refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base technical note:

    • KB17047 (KB5700-8X-2770): How to launch Strategy Desktop 8.x through the Command Line and provide login credentials to a Project Source

  • Project Merge: projectmerge.exe ] ] ] ] ]
    • For more information, type in projectmerge.exe -help.
  • Strategy Narrowcast Server Administration: cmdmgr.exe -w Strategy Tutorial (Direct) -u administrator -f c:\cmdmgr\startserver.scp -o c:\cmdmgr\output.txt

    • Refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base technical note:

    • KB11437 (KB6600-800-0248) - New Feature in Strategy Narrowcast Server 8.0.x: Administration Through Command Manager
