KB15381: 'Connect failed' error message obtained when attempting to use the Teradata ODBC driver on Linux on MicroStrategy 9.x

This article explains a possible reason for error message: "Connect failed. Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLDriverConnect. 523 80"

SYMPTOM:
The following error message is obtained when attempting to connect through Strategy DB Query tool to a Teradata database using the certified Teradata ODBC driver on Linux:

Connect failed. Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLDriverConnect. 523 80

Strategy Intelligence Server Universal is running on Linux Operating System and is set up to use the certified Teradata ODBC driver on Linux. The same connectivity error is obtained through Strategy Developer that uses this Strategy Intelligence Server.

The following troubleshooting steps do not yield tangible results:

  • The ODBC.sh file and the odbc.ini file are setup correctly for connectivity to Teradata, as per the instructions in the 'Installation and Configuration' guide.
  • The user is able to successfully telnet to the Teradata server on the port that it is listening on.
  • The ODBC trace log does not provide any information beyond the error message that is displayed.
  • The connectivity can be successfully established from a Windows machine using an equivalent Teradata ODBC driver on Windows

NOTE: The installation of Teradata ODBC driver requires the following components:

  • Teradata ODBC driver (tdodbc)
  • Teradata GSS client package (TeraGSS)
  • Shared common components for Internationalization for Teradata (tdicu)

The versions of the Teradata ODBC driver components on Linux may be ascertained using the following commands:

  • Teradata ODBC driver
    rpm -qa | grep tdodbc
  • Teradata GSS client package (TeraGSS)
    rpm -qa | grep TeraGSS
  • Shared common components for Internationalization for Teradata (tdicu)
    rpm -qa | grep tdicu

CAUSE:
One or more of the Teradata ODBC driver components are 64-bit versions. The ODBC drivers used with Strategy Intelligence Server Universal 9.x should be 32-bit for AIX, Solaris and Linux operating systems.

ACTION:
Check and ensure that the Teradata ODBC driver (tdodbc)and its dependent components (TeraGSS and tdicu) are the 32-bit versions and not the 64-bit versions.
