When troubleshooting issues with the report caching and the History List features in Strategy Intelligence Server 9.x - 10.x, diagnostic tracing can provide useful information. This technical note outlines the steps to enable diagnostic tracing used to troubleshoot these issues.
 
Diagnostic Tracing for Report Caches
The creation and deletion of report caches can be traced with the diagnostic option Report Server > Cache Trace.
 
Diagnostic Tracing for History Lists
The creation and deletion of History List messages can be traced with the diagnostic option Kernel > User Trace.
 
How to Enable These Traces

  1. Open Strategy Diagnostics Configuration Tool.
  2. Select 'CastorServer' Instance under 'Select Configuration'.
  3. Uncheck the option `Use Machine Default Diagnostics Configuration'.
  4. Look for 'Report Server' under Component column.
  5. For the Report Server component, under the second column `Dispatcher` look for the Cache Trace.
  6. For this row, go to the last column 'File Log' and click on the <None>, drop it down and select New.
  7. This will bring up a new window. Specify the following information
    • File Location:<New>
    • File Name : CacheTrace
    • File Size : 5000 KB
    • File Type : Diagnostics
    • Click on Save and Close
  8. Make sure that for the Cache Trace row under the column File Log, the log file created in step seven and eight is selected.
  9. Now look for Kernel under Component column and for the Kernel component, under the second column `Dispatcher` look for the User Trace.
  10. In the File Log column select the same log location as the Cache Trace.
  11. On the Diagnostics Configuration window, go to File > Save and Close.
