KB15985: The 'Group By ID Attribute' VLDB property does not get applied in a MicroStrategy Developer

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

SYMPTOM:
The 'Group By ID Attribute' VLDB property is not applied in a Strategy Desktop 8.x report for a specific attribute using an ApplySimple statement as one of its forms.

As shown below, for a specific report, the 'Group By ID Attribute' VLDB property is set to 'Group by column' instead of 'Group by expression' to avoid using an ApplySimple statement when the SQL is generated:

Even though this setting is selected, the SQL generated still includes an ApplySimple statement in the 'group by' clause causing an error, as shown below:

CAUSE:
The attribute form used for the 'group by' clause of the SQL generated is not an ID form. If the ApplySimple statement is in fact included as the Description instead of the ID form, this setting will not get applied, as shown below;

ACTION:
The correct VLDB property to use is the 'Group By Non-ID Attribute' VLDB property. The default setting should be changed to the 'Use Max' setting, a shown below:

By doing this procedure, the SQL will be generated correctly and this particular attribute will not be included in the 'group by' clause but it will be included in the 'select' clause achieving the desired results.
