KB16247: How to deliver a report as a CSV file using MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server 9.x - 10.x

This article describes how to deliver a report as a CSV file using MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server.

A report can be formatted to be delivered as Comma Separated Values (CSV) by using a plain text eXtensible Stylesheet Language (XSL). Although the reports that use this XSL are formatted as CSV, the final extension of the file will not be CSV and the use of the Execution Control document will be needed to achieve this.

To output a Report as a CSV file, follow the steps below:

  • Create a new plain text document.
  • In the Document Editor, insert an information object or grid report.
  • Select the document element from the Document Element List and the double-click the Properties List, as shown below:

  • On the Properties Window, click 'Browse' and select the MSTR7ToText-CSV stylesheet. Click OK and save and close the document.
  • Create a service with the Service Wizard and in the 'Message contents Section' add as an attachment the document previously created .
  • In the same section, to change the extension of the delivered file to CSV, enable the 'Enable advanced content sections' option. If E-mail delivery is being used, add the following exact syntax to the Execution Control Document:
    ChangeAttachmentName='filename.txt=filename.csv'
    If File delivery is being used, the syntax for the Execution Control document is the following:
    SaveDocumentAs='filename.txt=filename.csv'
    In this syntax, 'filename' is the name of the document set as the content of the delivery.
  • Finish the Service Wizard to save the changes.
