KB16273: How to apply a security filter to a group in MicroStrategy Developer 10.x

The steps below describe how to apply a security filter to a group in Strategy Developer 10.x:

  • Select the project for which to apply a security role (highlight the project in the folder list window after logging into the project source).
  • Open the Project Configuration Editor by either of the following methods:

    • Go to the Administration menu > Projects > Project Configuration.
    • Right-click the project highlighted and select Project Configuration
  • The Project Configuration window opens. Highlight General under Security filter
  • Click on the Modify button. The Security Filter Manager window appears, as shown below:

  •
On the left there are three tabs, the Security Filters tab, the Users and Groups tab, and the Attributes tab. On the right the user is able to sort information by Groups/Users or Security Filters. The Security Filters tab allows the user to view all filters associated with the project.

The user is also able to create a new filter by clicking on the New button, edit existing filters by highlighting them and clicking on the Edit button, or import existing filters that may have been used in reports by clicking on the Import button.

From this tab, one is able to move security filters from the left to the user or groups on the right that the filter should be associated with, as shown below:

  •
The Users and Groups tab allows the user to select which users or groups should be associated with security filters on the right, assuming that information on the right is grouped by Security Filters as displayed in the screenshot above.

  • To view users, simply check the Show users checkbox towards the bottom of the window, as shown below:

  •
The attributes tab allows users to select attributes to be associated with users and security filters. If information on the right is shown by Groups/Users, the user can add the attribute to the security filter associated to a particular user as in the screenshot above, where Item was added as one of the Top range attributes for NewSecurity Filter2, associated with user Allister Lewandowski.

If users do not specify a top range attribute, then the security filter applies to all levels higher than the bottom range attribute. If users do not specify a bottom range attribute, then the security filter applies to all levels lower than the top range attribute. When neither a top range attribute nor bottom range attribute is specified, then the security filter is applied to all levels of analysis.

  • Notice the arrows between the two visible panes. As is evident from the screenshots and the steps described above, these arrows move objects from the left to the right, or remove them from the right. If an object on the right pane is selected, and the left arrow is clicked, the object will be removed from the associated object on the right.
  • Once associations have been made based on the preceding steps, simply click OK.
  • The Project Configuration window will reappear, click OK.
  • Security Roles should have been successfully added to the project, based on selections made.
