KB16323: How to enable a second Logging Server in MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server

This article describes how to enable a second Logging Server in MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server.

The Strategy Narrowcast Server Administrator console does not let users specify two or more machines as Strategy Logging Servers (MLS).

Specifying a second MLS does not increase processing power and only helps to continue the creation of DELogs if one of MLS machines in the cluster goes down. This is achieved by sending the same information to two different Strategy Logging Servers.

By carrying out the following steps, a second MLS can be defined to receive information and generate an extra set of DELogs.

NOTE: The Strategy Narrowcast Server Administrator's System Message Viewer (a type of Logging Consumer) will always display information from one MLS.

Instructions:
Assume MachineA and MachineB are machines that will form a Strategy Narrowcast Server cluster. Both machines have the Delivery Engine installed.

  1. Use the Strategy Narrowcast Server  Administrator console to setup a cluster between MachineA and MachineB. Set the MLS to be MachineA.
  2. Stop the Strategy Narrowcast Server  Cluster.
  3. Modify MachineA's registry to add another Logging Server:
    1. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Strategy Strategy Broadcast Server\7.0\Distributed Logging Service\MLS Client Settings\MLS Servers\Server 1. Take note of the values that are there:
      • HostName
      • MaxRetryTimeOut
      • ServerSupplierPort
    2. Create another key under 'MLS Servers' called 'Server 2' with the three values of 'Server 1.'
    3. Under 'Server 2', change the HostName value to MachineB, which is the second MLS.
  4. Modify MachineB's registry to add another Logging Server:
    2. Create another key under 'MLS Servers' called 'Server 2' with the three values of 'Server 1'.
    3. Under 'Server 2', change the HostName value to MachineB, which is the second MLS.
  5. Restart the Strategy Logging Server, Strategy Logging Client, and Strategy Logging Consumer services on each machine in the cluster.
  6. Start the Strategy Narrowcast Server  cluster.

WARNING:
Modifying registry values incorrectly may cause serious, system-wide problems that may require the re-installation of Microsoft Windows NT. Any edit of the registry is done at the user's own risk. Since these are user-initiated changes, they are not covered by any Strategy warranty. If using Microsoft Windows NT, the user should backup the registry and/or update an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) prior to alterations.
