KB16396: A total subtotal incorrectly sums both the elements and individual items in a custom group in MicroStrategy Developer 9.x - 10.x.

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

This technical note outlines an issue where the Total subtotal displays the wrong results.

SYMPTOM:

When both the elements and individual items in a custom group are displayed in a grid report, the total subtotal value is wrongly calculated to include both the individual values as well as the element totals in Strategy Developer 9.x - 10.x, as shown below:

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Follow the steps below to reproduce this issue:

  • Create a custom group with two elements.
  • For the first element, set the 'Show Display Option' to 'Show the element names, individual items within this element and also, expand these individual items if possible' in the Custom Group Editor, as shown below:

  • For the second element, choose 'Show only the individual items within this element.'
  • Add this custom group into a report and select 'Yes' for the Allow Subtotals column under the Report Data Options function.
  • Execute the report.
  • The metric value of the first element (which is already the total of the individual items in the element) is added in the Total Subtotal displayed in the grid report.
