KB16408: ‘Information Source ID…received results for Information Object…with error message: : PreferenceObjectID for the udtPersonalizationSets(1) is an empty string’ error appears in the DE log when executing a service in Microstrategy Narrowcast Server

SYMPTOM
In Strategy Narrowcast Server, when a user executes a service with a dynamic subscription set and that delivers a Report Services document as file or an email attachment using personalized page execution, the document execution fails and the content is not generated.
 
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Follow the steps below to reproduce this issue with the Strategy Tutorial project:
 

• In Strategy Desktop 8.x, create a report that contains the Region and Year attributes in the rows and the Revenue metric in the columns. Add this report to a Report Services document and add the Year attribute as a group-by element, as shown below:
  

• In Strategy Narrowcast Server 8.x Administrator, create a subscription information object and in the 'User Properties and Personalization' section, set the Personalize option to 'Do not personalize'. Create a dynamic subscription set from this subscription information object, as shown below:

CAUSE
The service is configured to execute the Report Services document with personalized page execution, yet the subscription information object is not correctly setup to return each subscription personalization.
 
ACTION
Edit the subscription information object and verify the following to make sure that the subscriptions personalization can be returned:
 

• Create a personalized page execution service with the dynamic subscription set created in step two that will deliver the Report Services document created in step one as an email attachment.

• Execute the service and the document execution will fail and no content will be generated. On the DE log, the following errors appears:
  'Service…Execution ID…Segment ID…Information Source ID…received results for Information Object…with error message: : PreferenceObjectID for the udtPersonalizationSets(1) is an empty string'
  
• 'Error handled in procedure name'IInformationObject_Execute' and module name 'cPageDocumentIO' while trying to execute the information object. All incoming personalizations were bad or empty so document will not even be executed.Please make sure preferences are defined for the appropriate Question object…'
  
• Edit the subscription information object and in the 'User Properties and Personalization' section set the personalization option to 'Retrieve from report', as shown below:
  

• In the Preferences section, set the Preference for the Report Services document information object to the subscription preference returned by the subscription report. For this example, the preference is set to Year, as shown below:
