This knowledge base article explains why when trying to start a secondary Execution Engine in a clustered environment, the error ‘UnexpectedError: Automation error the server threw an exception’ occurs in MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server 9.4.x-10.x

SYMPTOM:
 
In a Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.4.x-10.x clustered environment, when users try to start the Execution Engine on secondary node, the following error occurs:

UnexpectedError: Automation error the server threw an exception

CAUSE:
The issue is caused by insufficient privileges of the account which runs Distribution Manager on the primary node. If Distribution Manager is running on a Local System account, the account cannot access Execution Engine remotely on a secondary node, as shown below:

ACTION:
Ensure that the Distribution Manager is running on a network account which has administrative privileges to access other nodes in clustered environment.
