KB16977: What is SmartHeap and how does it work with the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server?

The MicroStrategy Intelligence Serverand Intelligence Server Universal 9.x use a memory management component called SmartHeap designed by a software company named Microquill (http://www.microquill.com/). This component is designed to maximize memory allocation performance especially in a multi-threaded and multi-processor environment.

The Strategy Intelligence Server and Intelligence Server Universal use a memory management component called SmartHeap designed by a software company named Microquill (http://www.microquill.com/). This component is designed to maximize memory allocation performance especially in a multi-threaded and multi-processor environment.

SmartHeap works by replacing the normal C++ runtime and Operating System memory allocation system with its own code designed to enhance the same functionality. Since its code is linked with the Strategy Intelligence Server and Intelligence Server Universal, it affects only the Intelligence Server process. Other processes on the machine are not affected. SmartHeap manages the allocation of memory from the operating system and passes it along to the application as needed.

SmartHeap improves performance by performing the following actions:

    • Since memory allocation operations against the Operating System take a longer time to complete, SmartHeap typically allocates a larger chunk of memory than the application requests and caches the extra memory in its own data structures which it uses to satisfy later requests from the Strategy Intelligence Server and Intelligence Server Universal process.

    • Similarly when memory is freed by the application, SmartHeap will return the memory back to its cache rather than free it back to the operating system.

    • Even though SmartHeap may reserve larger amounts of memory than needed as detailed in step (a) it will not actually commit the memory until that memory is actually used so no overall higher penalty is incurred by adopting this strategy.

    • SmartHeap then divides the large chunks of memory allocated by the system into smaller "pages". These pages are used to store blocks of memory sorted by the size of the allocation. The memory allocations are divided into small, medium, big and large blocks.

      • The small block allocator deals with memory as an array of fixed size blocks. An array is present in memory for every possible size (e.g. 1 byte block, 2 byte block etc). This is is very fast for allocation and deallocation operations.

      • All allocators - small, medium and big use a data structure based on pools to service memory requests. A series of memory pools is created each holding variable sized memory blocks. SmartHeap determines the best pool to use based on the request, though sometimes the request size may be smaller than the block chosen. However the pool based architecture is very quick especially for multi-threaded applications like the Strategy Intelligence Server and Intelligence Server Universal 9.x running on multi-processor systems since multiple threads can access different pools at the same time.

      • The large block allocator is the simplest and forwards memory requests directly to the operating system in a serialized manner. Since this is a slower operation, Strategy Intelligence Servers that run with a heavy memory allocation profile may see some performance decrease. However this will provide a smaller process memory size, and memory freed by the action is released directly to the operating system without being cached.
    • The diagram below shows how SmartHeap works for the Strategy Intelligence Server Universal. The Free region is the memory allocated in bulk by SmartHeap which is then subdivided into pages for each block allocation size and then into pools. Large blocks are allocated directly from the Operating system.

    • SmartHeap defaults to following thresholds (in bytes) when determining which allocator is to be used to satisfy a memory request in Strategy:

The SmartHeap API also exposes a number of other tuning options. However to determine the optimal value for these settings in a production environment is not possible. Strategy runs performance tests while varying some of these parameters to determine a best case default value for these. Unless specifically recommended Strategy does not encourage changing the default values of the exposed settings without extensive testing, and before making these changes in a production environment.

Strategy Technical Support cannot determine whether there is any impact of changing these variables as this is a customization of the product behavior. Users requiring such analysis should contact Strategy Professional Services for assistance.
