KB17038: ’You do not have Server administration privilege that is required to perform this task’ error message appears when selecting projects to be monitored in MicroStrategy Enterprise Manager

• Strategy

’You do not have Server administration privilege that is required to perform this task’ error message appears when selecting projects to be monitored in MicroStrategy Enterprise Manager 9.x

SYMPTOM:
While configuring a project source in Strategy Enterprise Manager 9.x, the user is prompted to select the projects from within that project source to be monitored by Strategy Enterprise Manager. On entering the login information and clicking on 'List Projects', the user gets the following message:

ka04W000000Oe4rQAC_0EM440000002BRw.jpeg

You do not have Server administration privilege that is required to perform this task

CAUSE:
This is because the user who is trying to list the projects to be monitored by Strategy Enterprise Manager does not have sufficient privileges to perform the task. In order to configure a project source and list projects to be monitored by Strategy Enterprise Manager, the user must satisfy one of the following criteria:

  • User can be an Administrator user
  • User can be part of one of the following groups:

    • System Monitors
    • System Administrators (sub group of System Monitors)
    • Narrowcast System Administrators (sub group of System Monitors)
    • EMAdmin group
  • User can be part of the Everyone group with the following privileges granted:

    • Architect - Use Architect editors
    • Administration - Bypass all object security access checks

Without the 'Bypass all object security access checks' privilege, the user cannot access the server definition object (which is also the project source name in Strategy Enterprise Manager Configure Project Source Wizard) and will get the following error:

ka04W000000Oe4rQAC_0EM440000002BRu.jpeg

You do not have Read access to this ServerDef object (name is xxxx).
The System Monitors group provides an easy way to give users basic administrative privileges in the system. Users in the System Monitors group are granted read-only access to all of the monitoring tools under the Administration section of a project source's folder list. The only purpose of a user in this group is to monitor a project and its activity. They cannot modify any configuration objects such as database instances, server configurations, governors, and so on.

The System Administrators group is a group within the System Monitors group. It provides all the capabilities of the System Monitors group plus the ability to modify configuration objects.

The Administrator user is a built-in default super user created with a new Strategy metadata repository. This user has full control privileges on all objects in a project and can manage all users in Strategy.

The EMAdmin group is a built-in default groups created when the Enterprise Manager Project is added to the project source in Strategy Desktop. Any user created within this group by default gets the Administrator, Architect, and Desktop Designer privileges.

Note: Running either a custom time window or a manual data load in Strategy Enterprise Manager requires configuring a project source and list of projects to be monitored. Since this requires a user to be part of the System Monitor or its sub-groups, Enterprise Manager data load cannot be run by just any user.

ACTION:
Users have the following options to resolve this error:

  1. Use the Administrator login to list projects to be monitored
  2. Make the user part of the System Monitor or its sub-groups
  3. Make the user part of the EMAdmin group
