KB17236: 'The specified column name is invalid. One or more invalid characters were found, only alphanumeric characters and underscores are allowed in a column name' error occurs when creating a new column alias in MicroStrategy Developer 10.x

This article describes an error when creating a new column alias in MicroStrategy Developer 10.x

SYMPTOM:
When users try to use characters other than alphanumeric to create a new column alias in Strategy Developer 10.x, the following error message displays:

The specified column name is invalid. One or more invalid characters were found, only alphanumeric characters and underscores are allowed in a column name

 
 
CAUSE:
This issue occurs because the checking for an illegal character in column alias names has been enabled. This is applied at the project level. When this setting is enabled, users can only enter alphanumeric characters and underscores.
 
ACTION:
To disable this feature, the Administrator must execute the following steps:
 

  • Right-click on the project and select Project Configuration.
  • Go to Report definition > SQL generation.
  • Uncheck the box 'Check for invalid characters in custom column names' as shown below:
