KB17453: When attempting to hide attributes by adjusting column widths in MicroStrategy Developer Report Editor, the attribute name is not hidden while the elements from the adjacent column shift to where the hidden attribute used to be

When attempting to hide attributes by adjusting column widths in MicroStrategy Developer Report Editor, the attribute name is not hidden while the elements from the adjacent column shift to where the hidden attribute used to be

SYMPTOM:
When a user tries to hide an attribute by setting the column width to either 1 or 2 pixels, they notice that the attribute name is not hidden and that the attribute elements of any adjacent attribute shift to where the hidden attribute column used to be (left) in Strategy Developer. Similar behavior can occur even if the attribute to be hidden is positioned next to the metric columns on the report grid.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
The following steps describe how to replicate the behavior using sample data in Strategy Tutorial based on the simple report template pictured below in which the Category attribute and its elements need to be hidden:

  • Navigate to the Grid menu at the top of the Report Editor window and select 'Options'.
  • Click on the Columns and Rows tab and click on the 'Fixed' radio button in the Columns section.
  • From the drop down menu, select 'Category,DESC', and set the associated pixels to 1. Click OK, as shown below:

  • Execute the report if working in design mode, and notice that the Category attribute header is not hidden, but the elements are. Furthermore, notice that the Subcategory header is now hidden and the Subcategory elements appear under the Category attribute header.

CAUSE:
The exact cause for this issue is unknown at this time. The behavior can be slightly different between attributes based on attribute length and default width.
This is a known issue in Strategy Developer
ACTION:
Contact Strategy Technical Support for the latest status of this issue.

WORKAROUND:
In order to properly hide the desired attribute without affecting any adjacent attributes, set the Fixed column width for the attribute to 0 inches, or any value 3 or above based on preference. The behavior described above triggers when setting the width to 1 or 2.
