KB17704: How to use the Ntile function for ranking metric values by tier in MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.x - 10.x

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

This technical note describes the steps to use the Ntile function for ranking metric values by tier in MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.x - 10.x

In Strategy Developer 9.4.x - 10.x, the Ntile function sets up numbers of groups or tiles for a metric. An example of this would be to break the attribute Month into four tiers according to Revenue.
The report below shows how the Ntile Metric breaks Month into four tiers (1,2,3, and 4).

Notice that the Months are grouped into 4 tiers according to Revenue. The Ntile metric returns a 1 for metrics in the top 25 percent and a 4 for those in the bottom 25 percent.
To create the Ntile metric, follow the steps below:

  • Create a new metric using the function Ntile and the metric to use as a qualifier. This function is located under \Schema Objects\Functions and Operators\Function\ Rank and Ntile Functions\.

  • Highlight the function in the Metric Editor and right-click. Set the following parameters:

    • Accending: The lowest values are put in the first tier (True/False).
    • Tiles: Enter the number of tiers. (Integer value).

  • Set the level at which the function should break-by (Optional), as shown below:
