In MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server 10.x Administrator, if an administrator user edits or creates an information source, there is an 'Advanced Properties…' button. Pressing this button will load the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 10.x properties. There is a tab labeled 'Primary Server' which will allow an administrator to connect to a single MicroStrategy Intelligence Server or Intelligence Server 10.x cluster. In the Intelligence Server Clustering section, there is a column for Load Balancing.

How does Strategy Narrowcast Server Intelligence Server load balancing work?
The way that load balancing works in Strategy Narrowcast Server 10.x is on a per connection basis (i.e. segment basis).
Once a segment is loaded in the Execution Engine, it will open a connection to the primary node on the Strategy Intelligence Server 10.x.
The primary node will send information about the connection nodes to Strategy Narrowcast Server 10.x.
Strategy Narrowcast Server 10.x then calculates the load ratio of the current state of the connection loads of the nodes in the cluster.
Strategy Narrowcast Server 10.x then compares the loads against the load balance factors in the Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x information source modules to see the differences.
The node that has the greatest positive difference in load ratios is denoted to have the least amount of work.
The calculations are the following, where n is the number of nodes in the Intelligence server cluster and t is a particular node of the cluster:

After all of these calculations, Strategy Narrowcast Server 10.x will send jobs created by the current segment to the node with the lowest amount of load.
When another segment is launched, the process will repeat.
Important considerations for Strategy Narrowcast Server 10.x to Strategy Intelligence Server cluster load balancing

  • If all nodes in the Strategy Intelligence Server 10.x cluster are equal in their load ratio, then the connections will be made to the primary node.
  • Setting the information source refresh property to 'Never Refresh' will send all services requesting reports or documents from the same information source to the same node, as shown below:

  • Information sources that point to the same Strategy Intelligence Server 10.x cluster are viewed as different connections and will be load balanced as a different cluster.
  • The image below illustrates this point that the information sources are not viewed as the same source if they are pointing to the same cluster
