KB17843: How does the setting ‘Generate PDF in Narrowcast Server’ work for personalized page-by execution services in MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server 9.x?

When unchecking the option to 'Generate PDF in the Narrowcast Server machine', it would be logical to expect all the PDF generation to be done by the Strategy Intelligence Server 9.x, however this is not the case for personalized page-by execution services, as shown below:

Results retrieved from the Strategy Intelligence Server 9.x have to be sliced on the Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x machine and individual PDF documents created based on these subscription personalization preferences.

In this case, the Strategy Intelligence Server 9.x does part of the PDF formatting and sends the partially formatted data back to the Strategy Intelligence Server 9.x. After slicing the data, the Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x formatting module completes the remaining PDF formatting. In such cases, when the subscription set is large, it is possible that a spike in CPU usage is observed during this PDF formatting stage on the Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x machine.
