KB18022: When running a report with two set qualification filters and one based on ranking, the report returns incorrect data in MicroStrategy Developer

Stefan Zepeda

This article describes an issue when a user running a report with two set qualification filters and one based on ranking, the report returns incorrect data in MicroStrategy Developer.

SYMPTOM:
When running a report with two set qualification report filters and ranking, the report returns incorrect data in Strategy Developer

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Follow the steps below in the Strategy Tutorial project to reproduce the issue:

  • Create a report with the following two filters:
    • Filter 1: Cost < 100 and
    • Filter 2: Ran of 'Profit' Top 3
  • Add Customer attribute, Profit and Cost metrics, and both filters into the report as shown in the following image:

  • Run the report and no data is returned as shown in the image below:

  •
Note: From running these two filters individually, users are aware that there is data to be returned.

CAUSE:
In this situation, the report is not returning the desired results because the rank filter is being applied before the metric aggregation filter. The SQL is making a list of the 'Top 3 Customers by Profit' and is trying to find the customers with 'Dollar Sales < 500'.

The issue with combining these two filters (or any two metric filters) on a report is that one of the filters causes the other to come back with no data.

In this case, the Strategy Developer analytical engine first makes a list of the 'Top 3 Customers by Profit' and looks within that list for Customers that have 'Dollar Sales less than 500'. In this case, there were none (and even if there were, this is not the correct data on which to search.)

To correct this issue, the analytical engine needs to gather a list of the 'Customers with Dollar Sales less than 500' and take the 'Top 3 Customers by Profit' from that list.

ACTION:
To resolve this issue, users can set a report limit option. This option is used to force SQL engine to apply the set qualification filter based on the rank at the very end pass.

To set a report limit for a metric qualification, follow the steps below:

  • Create the report with the attributes and metrics to appear on the report.
  • Add the metric aggregation filter to the local filter definition, as shown below:

  • Go to Data > Report Data Options > Report Limit tab.
  • The default setting is 'No Report Limit' as shown in the image below:

  • Click on the Modify button at the bottom of the tab area. This brings up a screen that looks exactly like the filter creation wizard.
  • Go through the same steps used to create a metric filter. (In this case, choose to create a qualification based on Profit, only wanting the database to return the Top 3 Customers by Profit):

  • Click on save and close and return to the Report Data Options screen.
  • Click on OK and return to the report. The report re-executes and the correct list of information appears as shown in the image below:
