KB18094: Single value hierarchy node variables imported from SAP BW allow any number of prompt answers in MicroStrategy

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

This article notes a limitation of variable imports from SAP

SYMPTOM

A cube is imported from SAP BW. The cube uses a hierarchy node variable to restrict query results, and this variable is configured to permit a single value only.

The variable is properly imported into Strategy 9.x as a hierarchy prompt, but users may observe that the prompt allows any number of answers. In the illustration below, if the prompt were correctly restricted to one answer, the highlighted text would read "Maximum qualifications: 1" instead of "Not set."

CAUSE

This behavior is the result of how hierarchy node variables are imported into Strategy.

A variable defined in SAP BW as a "characteristic value" variable may also be set to allow just one answer. In that case, the prompt object created within Strategy for this variable will set the maximum number of values to 1.

The same is not the case for hierarchy node variables. For this type of variable, the "single value" property is not imported. Default values defined within SAP for the variable are also not imported.

ACTION

After cube import, it is possible to set the maximum number of answers manually in the prompt. Please perform the following steps.

  • Import the SAP BW cube into Strategy using the OLAP Cube Catalog.
  • Save and close the OLAP Cube Catalog to store the cube objects in the metadata.
  • Open the imported cube for editing. This may be done in one of two ways:
    • Reenter the OLAP Cube Catalog, switch to the Cube Mapping tab, and select the cube that was just imported.
    • Or, navigate to the Data Explorer for the SAP BW database instance. Locate the newly imported cube, right-click on it, and choose "Edit."
  • Right-click on the prompt object that needs to be changed.
  • One panel will include a checkbox to select default prompt answers. Enable this option and move to the next panel.
  • An object browser will pop up to choose the cube from which default answers may be selected. Choose the cube currently being edited.
  • The settings for maximum and minimum prompt answers are at the bottom of the default answers page. Specify the desired number here. (It is not necessary to provide a default answer, if none is needed.)
  • Save and close the prompt, and then the cube.
