KB18129: ‘Following error occurred while determining the system State: Object variable or with block variable not set’ error occurs when configuring MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server 9.x

SYMPTOM:
When configuring a Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x system either from the Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x machine or from a remote machine, the following error shows up preventing the configuration:

Following error occurred while determining the system State: Object variable or with block variable not set. If you know the system in running you should stop the system before continuing with the system Configuration

CAUSE:
One possible cause for this issue is a change of password for the account used to launch the Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x processes, such as the Strategy Distribution Manager service.

ACTION:
Re-set the password for the Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x processes such as the Strategy Distribution Manager service, as shown below:

Also, re-set this password in the MCDMProxy.CAdminServiceManager and MCProxy.CProxyConf DCOM components for the Windows Operating System. To access the DCOM configuration, run the ‘dcomcnfg.exe’ in Windows, as shown below:

This command will open the ‘Component Services’ windows. Navigate to the ‘DCOM Config’ section, as shown below:

Locate the MCDMProxy.CAdminServiceManager and MCProxy.CProxyConf components, as shown below:

Edit the Properties for these two components and re-type the new password in the ‘Identity’ tab, as shown below:

The Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x configuration should be able to resume normally after these changes are made.
