Both VLDB settings, 'Subtotal and Aggregate Compatibility' and 'Subtotal Dimensionality Aware,' modify the behavior of subtotals for a metric that calculates at a level higher that the report level in Strategy Developer 9.x. There are two options in each of these settings:
- Subtotal and Aggregate Compatibility
- 7.1 client subtotal behavior. 7.2 metric aggregations will not be dimensionality aware
- Recommended settings for all 7.2 projects
- Subtotal Dimensionality Aware
- False
- True
From the above settings, the following four combinations can be formed:

When '7.1 client subtotal behavior' is checked under 'Subtotal and Aggregate Compatibility,' the options under 'Subtotal Dimensionality Aware' do not hold any importance. This is because dimensionality aware functionality was not present in Strategy 7.1. So regardless of whether the user selects true or false under 'Subtotal Dimensionality Aware,' the subtotal will not be dimensionality aware.
However, when the 'Recommended settings for all 7.2 project is selected under 'Subtotal and Aggregate Compatibility,' the user has the option to make the subtotal dimensionality aware. Hence, selecting true or false under 'Subtotal dimensionality aware' will result in different subtotal values.
NOTE: Dimensionality Aware only affects the metric that is calculated at a level higher than the report level. In the example below in the Strategy Tutorial Project, this metric is the Yearly Revenue metric:
- Create a report with the attributes Year and Quarter and the metrics Quarterly Revenue and Yearly Revenue (calculated at Quarter level and Year level respectively). A filter on Year is included in this report for easy viewing of data.
- Add grand total to the report.
- This report will form the basis of the four combinations as described in the above table.
- Go to Data > VLDB properties > Analytical Engine and select the following settings:
- Under Subtotal and Aggregate Compatibility, select '7.1 client subtotal behavior. 7.2 metric aggregations will not be dimensionality aware.'
- Under Subtotal Dimensionality Aware, select 'False.'
- Execute the report and see the result below. Notice that the Yearly Revenue subtotal is the sum of all four rows in the grid:
