KB18854: The filter is ignored in the final pass when doing outer joins in MicroStrategy SQL Generation Engine 10.x

This article describes how out joins ignore the filter in the final pass in MicroStrategy SQL Generation Engine 10.x

SYMPTOM:
The report filters are ignored in the final SQL pass when applying an outer join and running a report in Strategy 10.x. This results in excess data being returned to users when doing outer joins.

CAUSE:
In Strategy 10.x, outer joins are designed to get all the data from the lookup tables. The Project-Level Very Large Database (VLDB) Property setting, found in Joins > Preserve All Lookup Table Elements, 'Preserve lookup table elements joined to final pass result table based on template attributes with filter' is not turned on, which results in the filters being ignored.

ACTION:
The VLDB Property setting for the filter to be applied to the outer join can be applied on either the project or report level. To rectify this issue, follow the steps below:

  • On either the project or report level, go to VLDB Properties > Joins > Preserve All Lookup Table Elements.
  • Turn on the VLDB setting'Preserve lookup table elements joined to final pass result table based on template attributes with filter' to apply the filter in the final pass. This option may be applied at project level VLDB setting or report level VLDB setting, as shown below:
