KB18912: How can a dynamic date be placed in a threshold in MicroStrategy?

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

This article notes how to use a dynamic date threshold in MicroStrategy

SYMPTOM:
A threshold allows a report designer to highlight certain data cells using conditional formatting based off specific criteria. The criteria are usually static but in this instance, the user would like it to be a dynamic date, e.g. 180 days before today will display green.

ACTION:
To accomplish this, follow the steps below:

  • Create a metric with the formula as shown below: M1 = (Max(Day) {~}

  • Create a dynamic date filter to display today's date. Refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base article for the steps on how to do this:

  • KB4328: How to create dynamic dates using Strategy

  • Copy M1. Add the filter created in step 2 to the condition of the metric. Name the metric M2 as shown below:

  • Create a DaysBetween metric using the formula M3= DaysBetween(M2-M1) {~} as shown below.

    Note: The Daysbetween function is found in the metric date and time functions.

  • Create a new Strategy report and place M3 on the report.

    Note:The best option may be to first display the metric on the grid to verify that it gets calculated correctly and later remove it from the grid and place it in the Report Objects window.

  • Add a threshold to display revenue in green when M3<180 (or whatever formatting is desired) as shown below:
