KB18926: Web Servers continue to connect to MicroStrategy Intelligence Servers even though the server connections have either been deleted or are set to manually connect in MicroStrategy Web

Web Servers continue to connect to MicroStrategy Intelligence Servers even though the server connections have either been deleted or are set to manually connect in MicroStrategy Web 9.x. In order to resolve this issue, it is best to essentially reset the Web Administrator settings to default via removing a few properties files.

SYMPTOM:
Consider the following scenario where a connection between the current Web Server and one or more Strategy Intelligence Servers is no longer needed, so the user goes ahead and disconnects the Strategy Intelligence Servers and either sets them to manually connect or deletes the connection entries. However, within a few minutes, the Strategy Intelligence Servers reappear on the Web Administrator page as connected to the Web Server.

It is confirmed through repeated trials that the Strategy Intelligence Server connections from the Web Administrator page have been both set to manually connect and delete, but the Strategy Intelligence Servers continually reconnect after a short period of time.

CAUSE:
The exact cause of this issue is unknown at this time. The likely cause is a property setting or combination of property settings on the Web Server machine.

ACTION:
In order to resolve this issue, it is best to essentially reset the Web Administrator settings to default via removing a few properties files.

Use the following steps to reset all server property settings to default:

  1. Create backups of the AdminServers.xml file, the sys_defaults.properties file, and any sys_defaults_INTELLIGENCE_SERVER_NAME.properties files. These files are typically located at the following location for a Windows based install - C:\Program Files\MicroStrategy\Web ASPx\WEB-INF\xml.
  2. Move these backup files to another location.
  3. Delete the original AdminServers.xml file, sys_defaults.properties file, and any sys_defaults_INTELLIGENCE_SERVER_NAME.properties files.
  4. Restart the Web Server.
  5. Re-add the desired Strategy Intelligence Servers.
