KB18999: How to retrieve a filter expression as text using the MicroStrategy Java Web SDK 9.4.1

• Strategy

An expression in MicroStrategy can be found in objects such as a report filter, an attribute or metric qualification prompt, or a user security filter. Although the expression appears as a single line of text, it is actually a collection of nodes organized in a hierarchical tree structure.

An expression in Strategy can be found in objects such as a report filter, an attribute or metric qualification prompt, or a user security filter. Although the expression appears as a single line of text, it is actually a collection of nodes organized in a hierarchical tree structure.

Sometimes however, it may be necessary to generate the string representation of the filter expression. It is possible to accomplish this using the Strategy Java Web SDK 9.4.1. For details, see the code below:

private String getFilterExpr(WebNode node) {

  int exprType = node.getExpressionType();
  if (exprType != EnumDSSXMLExpressionType.DssXmlFilterBranchQual)
   return node.getDisplayName();

  else {
   //This node is AND, OR, and so on
   if (node.getChildCount() == 1) //Skip single child branch node
    return getFilterExpr(node.getChild(0));

   else {
    String result = node.getDisplayName() + "(";
    boolean firstChild = true;

    for (int i = 0; i < node.getChildCount(); i++) {
     if (firstChild)
      firstChild = false;
     else {
      result += ", ";
      result += getFilterExpr(node.getChild(i));
     }
     result += ")";
     return result;

    }
   }
  }

To call the function:

WebNode rootNode = filterBean.getFilterExpression().getExpression().getRootNode();

String filterExprStr = getFilterExpr(rootNode);
