KB19468: Sorting by criteria in the Advanced Sorting Options does not work when a grid having an attribute in the column is included in a Report Services document in MicroStrategy

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

This article notes a limitation of advanced sorting in documents

SYMPTOM:

A grid with an attribute in a column cannot be sorted by the attribute in the Advanced Sorting Options when it is inside a Report Services document in Strategy.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

Follow the steps below to reproduce the issue:

  • Create a report with 'Customer' in the row and 'Profit' in the column, include the 'Month' attribute in the column as shown below:
  • Execute the report and select Data > Advanced Sorting Options. The column for criteria lists all the months displayed in the result set. Sorting can be performed by selecting the appropriate criteria, as shown below:
  • Now include this grid in a document and run the document, go back to the Design View and select Data > Advanced Sorting Options.
  • The 'criteria' column is not populated and hence Advanced Sorting cannot be performed, as shown below:

CAUSE:

Advanced Sorting is performed on data that is generated from the result set of a report. Hence, after executing the above report in Strategy, the 'criteria' column in the 'Advanced Sorting Options' lists the attribute elements for the 'Month' attribute. When the same report is included in a document, the Advanced Sorting Options in the Design View of the document does not list the attribute elements of the 'Month' attribute since the report is not executed yet. When the PDF view of the document is selected, the report is executed but then there is no option for 'Advanced Data Sorting' there. If empty criteria is selected, then there would be no sorting since the machine wants to know the Month for which to sort since the 'Month' attribute is in the column of the report.

ACTION:

Currently this issue is being reviewed by Strategy for a potential code fix on an upcoming Strategy release.
WORKAROUND:
Configure the sort settings on a report and add the grid from the dataset with formatting to inherit the criteria.
