KB19522: When setting the MaxWait parameter to zero in the PageConfig.xml file, how does this affect "Wait Pages" in MicroStrategy Web 9.x?

When setting the MaxWait parameter to zero in the PageConfig.xml file, how does this affect "Wait Pages" in MicroStrategy Web 9.x?

SYMPTOM:

In Strategy Web 9.x the Wait page is used for pages such as report execution, HTML document execution, document execution and search functionality. It displays the status of page-specific actions such as searching for prompts or performing a search.

To prevent any potential error when running scripts while performing stress testing on the Strategy Web and Intelligence servers, administrators may decide to disable the Wait Pages by setting the MaxWait = -1 on the PageConfig.xml file.

For more information on Disabling Wait Pages please refer to the Strategy Developer Zone (MSDZ) which can be found by clicking under Developer Resources on the left-hand navigation menu on the Strategy Support Site.

If MaxWait = -1 disables the Wait pages, it is common to believe that by setting MaxWait = 0 that it will enable and in all cases keep displaying the Wait pages. However, this assumption is not correct.
Setting theMaxWait to -1 means that Strategy Web will poll the Intelligence Server until the results are ready/error/prompt and not show the wait page. However, setting the value to 0 means that the execution will be in 'asynchronous' mode. In other words, Strategy Web will only poll the Strategy Intelligence Server once. Hence, depending on how fast the execution runs, users may or may not receive the wait page.
Therefore, the only way to avoid the wait page from showing up at all times will be to set the option to -1 as documented in the MSDL.
There is an existing enhancement request to include in the MSDL documentation an explanation for the scenario where the MaxWait = 0.
